You’re posting consistently. You’re showing up on your stories. You’re even using trending audios out the wazoo.
Yet here you are reading this article because you haven’t quite nailed down how to get clients on Instagram for your service based business.
We’re business owners. More specifically, we are service providers. So in order to make sure we have a business (& not just a hobby), we need one main thing: inquiries.
So if you’re not getting inquiries, let alone a single DM from someone sorta interested, then you might be thinking “wtf is up with this app… it’s gotta be broken or something, right?”
Any my answer for you is no. It’s not.
Now before we get to the good stuff, I wanted to let you know that I also made a YouTube video on this same exact topic. Just in case you prefer learning from video content instead of reading, I will link that for you to watch here: 4 Reasons You’re Not Booking Clients from Instagram & How to Fix It!
What’s actually happening is that you’re likely making a few sneaky mistakes that are blocking your dream clients from sliding into your inbox.
So I am super stoked to tell you that this is really good news because it means this is 100% fixable.
So instead of spiraling through endless scrolling and contemplating your business’s entire existence, let’s break down the 4 reasons your Instagram isn’t converting to dream client inquiries, and how to change that starting today!
Oh, and before you even say it… no, you don’t need thousands of followers to book dream clients with Instagram.
I’ve been booking out my 1:1 coaching services with just over 1,000 followers.
And for my photography business’s Instagram, I have actually lost followers over time & I have always maintained a consistent conversion rate. So followers do NOT equal clients. The way you approach it does!
We’ve all been there: you see someone go viral and think, “okay sick, I’ll do that too.”
But here’s the deal: content that gets views does not guarantee that it will get you inquiries.
Your dream clients aren’t looking for another trending reel that makes them laugh. They’re looking for proof that YOU understand their problems and have the solution they need.
Sure, some people simply want a dopamine hit when they scroll on their feed. But remember, we aren’t trying to reach just anyone. We want to reach DREAM CLIENTS. End of story.
Instagram content that attracts clients starts with getting super duper specific about what your target audience needs more of in their life.
Stop obsessing over what your competition is posting. Instead, zoom in on your dream clients’ buying decisions and their burning desires.
Start creating content that moves them from “that’s helpful, I’ll save this for later” to “wait… I need this person in my life. Let me check their profile to see what they’re about.”
I hope you’re taking notes right now…
If you want to use Instagram to book more clients, then your content needs to be convertible… not just savable, likable, or sharable.
I know how conflicting this may sound considering lots of marketing experts out there will tell you that you need content that engages your audience.
But when it comes to actually generating leads for your business, you NEED to be getting more than engagement. You need traction.
Because remember: content creators chase virality.
But for service providers, we need conversions.
If your stories are just BTS coffee pics & your daily rants… then yeah, they’re not going to help you book more clients.
Those Instagram story content ideas are important too for things like building connection & relatability with your business. It’s also great for humanizing your brand.
But stories are hands down your biggest sales tool on Instagram! But only if you use them strategically.
Think of them as your own little TV show where people binge watch your content, connect with your vibe, and get gently guided toward working with you.
Now this is just an overview on Instagram story marketing, but I will leave another article here for you if you want a full breakdown on how to market on Instagram stories to book more clients.
But your goal should be to create a soft selling rhythm in your stories. You don’t need a 10 slide, overly produced Canva graphic every day (because tbh, that’s a little too much).
What you do need though, is a repeatable story flow where you…
Mix that in daily and you’ll start seeing your link clicks and or the traffic to your bio link rolling in.
And if your brain is already panicking about what to post… I’ve got you. Grab my freebie with 15 Instagram Story selling prompts so you never run out of ideas!
I see this one ALL the time. You’re educating, inspiring, posting cute tips… but when someone lands on your profile, they’re like:
“Cool content, but… what do you actually do?”
If people are asking themselves this question when they land on your profile… BIG. RED. FLAG.
So I encourage you to repeat your services, everywhere.
Like, obnoxiously.
But the cool thing about this is that you may think it’s obnoxious, but your followers literally couldn’t care less about how much you talk about your services. For real, for real.
Here’s how I know this… Every day we have ads shoved in our faces from billion dollar companies that don’t give a flying crap out solving our problem. They just want our money.
They’re everywhere. Whether you’re scrolling on social media. Or at the gas station filling up your tank. Or watching your favorite tv show. For crying out loud, you can’t even get your mail without having a ton of promotions. Or how about oh idk, driving to literally any destination?
Wherever you go. Whatever you do. Billboards. Print mail. ADS. ADS. MORE ADS.
So how come we all have a terrifying amount of ads being shoved in our faces by companies that don’t have our best interest…
But YOU the service provider who exists to solve a problem for your target audience to actually benefit their lives… YOU are scared to sell?
Let’s just let that sink in.
Okay now back to the regularly scheduled program…
Maybe you offer multiple services. Let’s say you’re a photographer that specializes in weddings and portraits. If you want to book more photography clients, then you need to repeat yourself throughout your content so its obvious to your audience you capture people in multiple different stages of life.
You do this through having strong content pillars (& no, I don’t mean the educational, inspirational, and promotional kind…)
For more info on content pillars, here’s another article I wrote on that: What are content pillars for social media?
But to simply break it down for you, for each service you offer, you can rotate through posts like:
But the bottom line is that you need to repeat yourself.
People may have an idea of what you do, but they don’t fully get it. So be clear, transparent & consistent in how you post your content on Instagram & you’re golden.
Just remember that confused people don’t convert. So make your services as clear as that overpriced glass cup you bought off TikTok because “you’re just a girl.”
Hoping someone randomly DMs you because you posted a cute reel? That’s not a strategy. That’s delusion, ya silly girl.
If you want to consistently grow your business on Instagram & get more inquiries from what you post, it’s less about luck and more about guiding people.
Your audience needs a clear path to follow. From the very first moment they discover you, to learning how to trust you, to getting all the info for working with you.
You must be making every single post lead somewhere.
Do you want them to comment?
Click your bio link?
Book a call with you?
Take their hand & show them what to do after consuming your content like they’re a 5 year old going to kindergarten for the first time.
Then check your actual client journey:
The internet is loud af. If you don’t guide people, they’ll just scroll past you to the next person in your niche. Don’t let that happen.
If Instagram isn’t booking you clients, check yourself on these 4 things:
None of this has to be complicated, but it does need to be intentionally thought out.
