Why Hustle Culture Is Toxic for Entrepreneurs Who Want Sustainable Business Growth
As service based business owners, we have been sold a LIE.
And it goes a little like this…
Hustling means you’re successful. Resting means you’re lazy. And slowing down means you’re falling behind.
Like what. the. actual. HECK?! I mean even just looking at those words on my screen right now sounds so… unhealthy. Yeah… because it is. But a lot of us fell for that narrative.
Hustle used to feel productive… until it started costing us our energy, creativity & consistency.
I mean think about it… posting more, working longer, and trying harder used to be this weird flex that meant you’re on the right track to achieving your goals… then it somehow ended up making us feel worse. Funny how that works.
But the real reason you’re burnt up, fed up & simply wanna give up… is because hustle culture burnout was fed to us on a silver platter. But guess what? It was all bull crap. A true trojan horse in the business owner world.
However the cool thing now is that by not wanting this lifestyle for your business anymore, it doesn’t mean you aren’t unmotivated, or lazy, or bad at business.
Instead it means that your nervous system is begging for you to stop treating it like a gosh dang rag dolllll. It’s begging you to drop the “hustle culture in business is cute” act & get rooted in purpose. Be more intentional. Seek alignment. Ya know, all the good things in life!
So if you’re reading this & thinking in the back of your head, “well Kaylie, I still wanna like… burn it all to the ground & just forget about it… THAT is how much it’s drained me.”
Then I’ll say, I’ll pour the gasoline & you strike the match!!! Let’s burn this puppy to the ground!
But not your business… your pre-existing mindset around business! I am pro “burn the business burnout to the ground” not your business itself. And once you do (metaphorically of course) then we get to focus on sustainable business growth going forward!! (YAYYY for healthy business growth!!)
How to Stop Burning Out in Business
Because the reason you feel like everything is too much to handle is because you’ve probably chosen to follow the pretty & trendy social media advice.
Things like “use this trending audio” & “post 3 times a day if you wanna grow” & all that bull crap. Yeah, those tips weren’t to help you build a grounded business, but to get good engagement & chase attention.
Now don’t get me wrong, those things can be helpful, for sure.
But if you just follow simple tips & expect it to be your Yellow Brick Road to a business that runs itself & lets you keep your sanity… then unfortunately my girl, you followed more of a… oh how do I put this lightly…? You followed a road that led ya to a black hole.
And it consumed every part of you.
“Oh jeeze Kaylie, that was harsh…”
Yes but do ya see why hustle culture is toxic for entrepreneurs now? Because when you sit down & see the words written out, it sounds so silly. And I used the word “toxic” for a reason.
So to make sure you work on things that make your life easier in the long run, you need to build what I like to call a business ecosystem. Aka, how to stop burning out in business!
This is where the marketing work you do compounds, systems you build easily repeat, and the results you get don’t just happen for one week.
And lately, one of my top goals for my businesses have been to prioritize intentionality in every nook & cranny. Enough of that viral bull crap… I mean, gag me with a spoon for crying out loud…
Noooo I want that predictable growth, the emotional capacity to show up consistently, and a business that doesn’t spike my cortisol by 8:00 am…
And after 5 years of frickin treading on water to make hustle culture work… (it didn’t lol) I finally feel confident enough to say that the ugly & not cute work I did the past few years have finally paid off.
With my photo company, I hardly have to post on Instagram & I have people finding me & booking me monthly by finding me on Instagram.
I haven’t had less than 4 leads come through each month from potential clients that find me on Google (even in my slowest months of the year)
I can run a Meta Ad & then forget about it & watch the leads come through for months, booking thousands of revenue for every $200 I spend.
Now hold on, enough about me (because I can’t stand someone who just talks about themselves) but my main point is that you don’t need to follow toxic marketing advice to be booked with clients AND feel at peace in your business.
Sustainable Business Systems for Service Provider
You just need to focus on setting up a business ecosystem that relies on a slow growth business model.
For example, think about a legit ecosystem that exists in nature all around us.
The sun, rain, different layers of soil, plants, animals, & even the annoying insects… each play a role. And when one piece is removed, the entire system is disrupted.
This is because it was all created to be self-sustaining. God literally created everything for a reason, and it all serves a purpose. Like how freaking cool is that!!???!
Now it’s the same thing with your business ecosystem.
Your strategies and systems support one another so your business can function as a unit without solely relying on YOU to be the one to make it happen.
But that doesn’t happen until you set it up. THEN it runs on its own.
And sustainable marketing strategies or intentional business growth doesn’t happen overnight. BUT it’s not as complicated as it sounds, truly.
So if you want to learn how to set yours up & get support along the way, I would honestly love to help you & show you how! This is why I created my monthly business coaching memberships!
